THE 'ISMS' OF ART

.

Art History is divided into some very familiar, and some not-so-familiar terms: Gothic, Renaissance, Mannerism, Baroque, Romanticism, Neo-Classicism, to name a few! But to what do these terms refer? Are they styles or periods of history? Are they related to a particular artist, school or group? Who coined the term and why?

Why, in the 19th century did art have an increasing number of 'movements'? What exactly were Fauvism, Expressionism, Cubism, Dada, Surrealism, Abstract Expressionism, Minimalism and Conceptualism? What is, or was, Post Modernism?

This course takes a chronological sweep through the history of Western Art, stopping off at important periods and movements. We discover what they mean, why they happened, how they were named and - of course - the key artists and styles.

From Classical to Contemporary, join me on a fascinating journey to discover the 'isms' of Art.
